How do emotions shape what and how we learn? In a time when education is being asked to address uncertainty, rapid change, and increasing diversity, it is vital to understand the role of emotions in learning. This interactive two-hour workshop explores the meaning and potential of emotions in education, challenging the idea that emotions and rational thinking are separate or even opposed. Drawing on anthropological and philosophical insights and recent research, we will investigate how emotions guide attention, influence memory, and shape judgement, often determining what counts as meaningful learning.

Instead of relying on a lecture, this session invites teacher education students of all school types to actively engage in experiential activities, collaborative discussions, and guided reflections. Together, we will explore how recognising emotions as central to learning opens possibilities for more inclusive, responsive, and transformative education. Participants will leave with a deeper understanding of the interplay between feeling and thinking, as well as practical ideas for integrating emotional awareness into their own teaching, research, and professional practice.
