A WORKSHOP FOR FUTURE TEACHERS WITH DR. ANA SOBRAL

At least since the murder of George Floyd in the USA, the debate about racism in everyday society has flared up, also in Europe. This workshop approaches racism precisely as an everyday practice that many of us, citizens of European countries, have in fact internalised. We look at the history of racism, in order to discuss its continuity up to our days. Finally, we explore strategies of teaching anti-racism in the classroom, using literature, film and other popular culture products.

The workshop is part of our DAAD-funded project “Mobility in International Teacher Education”.

DR. ANA SOBRAL

In her research and teaching, Ana Sobral has focused on postcolonial literatures and cultures in English and German. Her last project was on the globalisation of rap music and its political dimensions, which she published as a podcast on Swiss radio. Her work in general is dedicated to fighting racial prejudice and historical amnesia, while also celebrating the exciting diversity of postcolonial cultures across the globe. Besides academia, she collaborates with cultural institutions and schools to promote postcolonial works, performances, artists and activists.

REGISTRATION

The workshop takes place as part of the project week at the English Department, but is open to students of all subjects from Heidelberg University and Heidelberg University of Education. The number of participants is limited. Please register with Dr. Corinna Assmann by 5th June.
